"I want a change of career and wish to become a Security Dog Handler"

First think about who you want to work for, some companies give you a trained dog and then train you to handle it, or you have your own dog (a Guard Breed)  do a recognised training course, finishing with an assessment with the British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers Security Division Exam, or NASDU become a self employed handler.

"How much will it cost"

My own students have to complete 10 units of training and that would cover 42 subjects. Total for the course 2011 is £750. Based on a group.

"How do I start"

First you do a day’s assessment which costs £50.00, so I can see if you’re the right stuff, and your dog. Comes off the price of the course if you do it. If you pass I train you if you don't you go home, and get another trainer, or another dog. Take advice go and see some training, don't just go and buy a dog off some bloke who says its trained, pay someone like me to look at it for you. It might be a right donkey and you'll end up with a rubbish standard.

"Can I do the course without a dog"

No, but we may be able to help you find a suitable dog through our contacts

"Where and when is your course run"

The course is Run Sunday Monday Tues for three weeks then an assessment day, it’s based in Hertfordshire near Stevenage but we may use buildings or locations if available anywhere suitably close. When depends on numbers usually three times a year

"Can I come and watch the training first before I get a dog"

Yes by prior appointment, we take a couple of visitors on refresher training

Be careful if you get a call back from an e-mail enquiry within the hour that says I can start your training tomorrow I guess its from someone who hasn't got a lot on. Advice should always be free, so ask lots of questions, but be careful there's a lot of people out there waiting to rip you off.
Whatever you decide Good Luck
Regards
Mic Martin
